I recently ran into a pretty annoying bug with my Quest 2 headset when I was trying to install a new game. I noticed that
nothing was happening and when I looked at the updates queue there was a bunch of updates waiting to be downloaded and 
installed. The Quest said that one of my games (Rec Room) was currently installing an update but nothing was happening.
It was stuck and because it was stuck I was completely unable to install anything else!

I looked for ways to cancel the update but it turns out you can only cancel an update when it is queued or still 
downloading. You cannot cancel the update once the Quest has started to apply it. I tried to turn the headset off and on
again (you know the standard cure for every tech problem) but this does not work here. I was stumped. I searched online
for a solution but all I could find was people saying that a factory reset solved it. I really didn't want to do this
because I use an Oculus account rather than a Facebook account to sign in to my Quest 2 headset. To do this I had to 
follow the following steps the first time I used my Quest 2:

* Create a Facebook account  
* Sign-in to and activate the Quest 2 using the Facebook account
* Contact Oculus support (live chat on the website)
* Request that your Facebook account is unlinked from the Quest 2 headset and converted into an Oculus account
* Delete Facebook account

You can see why I didn't want to factory reset and do all of that again.

That's when I discovered [SideQuest](https://sidequestvr.com/). SideQuest is different things to different people but 
it's basically an alternative app store. I mean it's filled with all kinds of games and apps that you can "Sideload" onto
your Quest, hence the name SideQuest.

> Sideloading is just a term given to the practice of installing software onto your device from outside the official 
> channels which in the case of the Quest 2 would be the Oculus Store.

Using SideQuest it's possible to list out all the apps that are currently installed on your Quest 2 headset. However 
before you can use SideQuest you need to enable developer mode on your Quest 2. Thankfully this is quite easy. Simply 
open the Oculus app on smartphone and follow these steps:

* Click Menu in the bottom right of the screen
* Click Devices
* Scroll down and choose Developer Mode
* Toggle the switch to ON

At this point you will be taken to the Oculus 
[website](https://developer.oculus.com/resources/publish-account-management-intro/)
where you will need to create a developer account. You can find instructions for how to do this and how to install 
SideQuest

Once you have enabled Developer Mode and SideQuest is successfully connected to your headset we can finally unblock 
the stalled update that is causing all the problems. To do so we need to search the list of installed apps for 
`com.oculus.ocms` as shown in the picture below.

When you find the item click the Settings Cog icon on the right-hand side to bring up some options for that app that look
like this:

From here you want to click the Yellow `CLEAR APP DATA` option. Now reboot your Quest 2 and you should find the problematic 
update is no longer stalled and is now being applied successfully!

# Bonus content

I haven't done much more with SideQuest yet but I do plan to explore it more this year. I will probably write quite a 
bit about it as I discover cool things to play with.

SideQuest has an additional feature where you can send commands directly to the Quest headset. The Quest 2 is actually 
just an Android device much like a mobile phone. Because of this you can send commands using 
[Android Debug Bridge](https://developer.android.com/studio/command-line/adb) or `adb` for short. 

One thing that can be annoying with the Quest 2 is it goes to sleep pretty quickly if you remove the headset. This can 
be annoying if you want to quickly want to leave the room to get a drink or go to the bathroom or take a call or whatever
as it messes up your location and will require you to reset your position/guardian when you come back. I've found a great
way to disable this by sending a command to the headset using `adb` that disables the proximity sensor!

Note; this only works for the current session. If you turn off your Quest 2 headset you will need to send the command 
again.
